If you've ever experienced mental health issues that affect you at work, you might have kept that to yourself, or maybe you felt comfortable enough to share your issues with your boss? According to the CIPD Health and Wellbeing at Work Report 2021, 45% of employees say their mental health has worsened during the pandemic. Yet respondents don't feel positive about their manager's ability to support their mental health. That's not surprising, as managers often face conflicting demands to deliver on targets while also managing people and supporting wellbeing. In fact, 32% say it is their manager's management style that is the cause of their workplace stress.
So how DO you go about speaking to your boss about your mental health? Author Melanie Gibson did it, but not before suffering years of poor mental health and keeping quiet about it. Hear her story on episode 44 and get her advice on how you can approach this tricky conversation.
